Hydraulic steering
I have a 1981 47’ Boatel Houseboat with hydraulic steering. The steering wheel can be turned in either direction continuosly even though the engines are as far as they can go. Also the ram seems to stick in a certain position until all at once we hear a loud bang and then the steering works. What is the problem? Also where do we add hydraulic fluid, at the Helm?

The helm unit is by-passing and needs to be replaced. As for the popping, check to make sure the hydraulic cylinder is not bent.

We need a bit of information… What is the engine type? Is this a single station vessel?
