Shift Cable
We have a 1972 Mercruiser that will shift into forward and neutral but will not shift into reverse most of the time. What shift cable do I need? Submitted by: Stacey
First thing you need to do is check the shift cut out switch to make sure it’s functioning correctly. If it is, change the drive shift cable.
I can try and shift the throttle in forward gear and it will just rev up
I can try and shift the throttle in forward gear and it will just rev up. I can push the linkage beside the carb and it will go in forward gear. Reverse works okay. It looks as if the cable is moving in the shifter box. If I need to take the shifter box apart does it come apart from the back or front? I see no screws on the front. One handle shifter the key switch is in the dash not on the shifter. Submitted by: danny

Sounds like either your control cable is sticking or the shift cable in the drive is hanging up.
