Look on the cover behind the crankshaft pulley. There is a mark in the center.
Boat Runs great in drydock 5000+rpm, Put in water it spits sputters backfires & Won't go over 1100rpm.
I have a 1986 bayliner capri 2.3 volvo penta 4 cyl with aq275 outdrive. Runs great in drydock 5000+rpm put in water it spits sputters backfires & wont go over 1100rpm. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Answer It is hard to say exactly what the problem is but generally the two things that can cause this are lack of fuel and ignition timing. If you cannot decide what issue you have, try this: Change the filters (check for debris and color of fuel in filter) and do a complete tune up with cap rotor wires etc. This method will not waste money since they are all considered maintenance items and should be done periodically per your maintenance manual. Volvo also uses a timing belt on that engine for cam/crankshaft timing and this issue can also be caused by the belt jumping a tooth knocking the engine out of time. I hope this helps.
