OMC Cobra Drive Units

I have a 1989 seaswirl with a cobra drive the shift handle has striped and is hard to get into gear. will a shift handle and control fit without changing the cables? If so what part number do I need?

I have recently purchased a 23 foot boat with a diesel Steyer engine with an OMC Cobra out drive. When I purchased the boat I sent it in for a major service and had to import a few spares from the states for the water pump, bearings bellows etc as water had got into the unit. After less than 2hrs of use, the lower end failed. I have not stripped it yet, but it defiantly appears as the gears have failed.

Obtaining the few spares I needed was quite a mission as most are now discontinued. The unit model is 32dapeamh, with an out drive 897129 serial number of the engine is B08890124 and the out drive T0745025.

I have been trying to find the best option to make the unit reliable, and from the internet it looks like I should fit a Volvo Penta SX drive and relocate the water pump the other option is a MERCRUISER ALPHA 1. Both units I presume can be fitted but I am concerned about finding an engine mounted water pump for the Steyer. My main concern is getting a unit in which I can get spares for years to come and have reliability as been in Africa ordering spares from the U.S takes some time to reach Africa.

If you could possible assist with some advice and if possible would you be able to supply the spares or a whole outdrive. You advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated as OMC is obviously no longer, the engine is still very low hours and beautiful thus would like to try and get a unit on that is one very reliable and secondly I can obtain spares to keep running for some years to come.
