Isolator for sailboat with 1 alternator, 1 solar panel and 2 batteries
Can I consider the solar panels just like a second alternator? In this case, what isolator can I buy for a 10Amp solar panel and a 50Amp alternator, 2 batteries for a sailboat?
Submitted by: Luis Chaves
You keep the charging system from these two systems separate. The alternator will run through a Battery Isolator. A 10 amp panel is a huge panel - are you sure that you do not have a 10 Watt panel? If you have a smaller panel, you will need to just hook the panel up to the batteries, without a charge controller. If the panel is larger, over 50 watts, you should add a charge controller. The charge controller wil offer a split between the house and engine battery.
