A stuffing box, or packing gland, is used around a propeller shaft where the shaft exits a boat's hull underwater. The stuffing box is the most common method for preventing water from entering the hull while still allowing the propeller shaft to turn.

Post a question or comment about Packing Boxes / Stuffing Boxes / Packing Glands to our online boating community.
What size stutting box packing do I need?
I have a 3/4 shaft Stuffing box and I wish to know what is the correct packing size to use in that struffing box.
Submitted by: Mike
It depends on the manufacture and shaft log type. I would try to measure the packing gland. Most likely it is 3/8".
