Answer

Chartplotters start about

GPS is available for as low as

Garmin is the leader (I have owned 7 Garmin GPS’s since my first Garmin 75 in 1992). I have tested and tried nearly every other manufacturer - and I always come back to Garmin. I have had 5 navigation models and 2 automobile models.

Honestly, I think that you just need a simple GPS and a good chart of the local area that you are sailing in. I would advise a chart plotter if you were taking a trip down the ICW or sailing further.

In my opinion, even reviews are slanted. Also, most reviews are tailored towards larger units on boats with more power who wants combination features.

Take a look at this GPS

likely a handheld is suitable for you.
What price range? The other thing you could do it buy a unit that is a couple years older and it would be fine for you.

Take a look at the Garmin GPSMAP 76 series and chart (which you likely already have)
#22 ICW NJ: Manasquan Inlet-Barnegat Bay-Manahawkin Bay

New sailors should use charts and compass. The GPS is nice to confirm position and when you want to know CMG, SOG and other data. The simplest eTrek will tell you Heading, CMG and SOG and use waypoints.
