Marine Engine Controls

Mechanical Control

Not much credit is given to marine engine controls for providing comfort and assurance when it comes to boat handling. On a newly acquired vessel it is common to keep the controls originally installed and to learn to live with it, although they might not perform to the individuals boating style. Changing out a boat shifter control can make a world of difference like swapping out a confusing two-lever unit to a simpler single level combination unit. Or replacing a four-level controller to a two-lever combo unit commonly found on older twin engine vessels. It might be preferable to have the throttle independent from the gear shifter but whatever the preferences are, a control module that is smooth, comfortable and easy to operate will go far to reducing boating stress and boat handling anxiety. Marine throttle controls are manufactured in all shapes and styles that provide the captain with multiple options including several tailored to the individuals boat handling style.

Push Pull Cables

In the event boat throttle control start feeling stiff or the boat gear shift become hard to operate is indicative the marine push pull cables are nearing the end of their service life. Replacing a marine throttle control cable is usually a straight forward process and replacement marine control cables can be custom manufactured although for most applications there are pre-made cables available from manufacturers such as Dometic® or Uflex®. A removed used push pull cable will give a false sense of smooth operation and only when it is replaced with new, the deterioration becomes apparent. Dometic® or Uflex® manufacture cables for cable ends or cable mounting styles that are specific to most engine manufacturers.

Go2Marine stocks a large assortment of mechanical controls, replacement cables and is a captains one stop shop for all marine throttle and shifter needs.
