Freshwater cooling question
I just bought a boat with a Volvo Penta 4.3 liter engine, never been used in salt water. It has 177 hours on it. I have been told it’s no big deal to use it in salt water as long as I flush it after use. On the other hand, I’ve been told that I absolutely must put freshwater cooling on it. On the other hand, I’ve been told that I’ll lose engine life with freshwater cooling due to higher running temps. On the other hand, I’ve been told to use a desalting treatment. On the other hand, I’ve been told that such treatments do no good. Someone sort this out for me! Submitted by: Kevin
The majority of marine engines don’t come with closed cooling systems. Is it a must for salt water use? No it is not. Is it a good investment? Absolutely! A closed cooling system will prolong the life of the engine not shorten the life of the engine. If you don’t have a closed cooling system, it is a good practice to use a product like Salt Away to flush the engine and drive unit before storing the boat.
Freshwater engine cooling kits
Is there a block and manifold kit for a volvo penta 1986 gm 350 cdi, or does Volvo only recommend the block. Saltwater is hard on the exhaust manifolds too. Submitted by: Russell Paci
There are no full systems for Volvo. Some manifolds and risers are not drilled and tapped to accept necessary hose fittings.
Also, Volvo engine configurations don’t leave enough room to handle a tank large enough to compensate for cooling the manifolds.
