Question
1995 Mariner 40 Magnum

My motor will not start. I can hear a clicking noise from a part that I cannot identify. The part is a cylinder shape bolted to the engine. It has a gold colored top and the bottom is black plastic. There is one yellow and one black wire leading to the part.

Answer

Sounds like the starter solenoid is not getting enough voltage or current to fully engage. I’d check the voltage on the engine starting battery as a first step before you consider the solenoid.

Question
1996 Wellcraft Coastal 238 that steering oil leaks at the shaft

I have a 1996 Wellcraft Coastal 238 that steering oil leaks at the shaft connected to the outboard Mercury 200 hp engine. The leak is coming from the seal. Is there a place to buy oil seal?

Submitted by: jess guanlao
Answer

It sounds like you have hydraulic steering. If that is the case, we need the number off the cylinder to find the correct seal kit.

Question
1988 Mariner 8.5 boat motor

I have a Mariner 8.5 motor 1988 that works perfectly. I am wondering if parts are still available, I would like to sell it. In addition, what would be the value of the motor?

Answer

There are parts available for Mercury outboards. The value is whatever your particular area will allow.

Question
early 80's Mariner

Having problems with my 60 hp Mariner from the early 80’s. It will only run about 25% throttle under load, turns up RPM out of the water, or out of gear. I checked compression, it’s 90 and 92 lbs, but now think one plug is not firing however, I have new plugs. What next?

Submitted by: harold
Answer

If you have compression less than 100 PSI, the cylinder is not completely combusting. You need a minimum of 100 PSI to fire and normal compression on this engine is 130 PSI.
