How do I select the correct starter for a 40hp Mariner outboard?

How do I know if I need a starter with 11 teeth or 10 teeth? I do not have the starter from the engine but there was a starter at one point, and I would like to reinstall one.

Answer

In order to insure you get the correct starter, we will need the serial number of the outboard.
