Protect Your Boat and Engine with Salt Away

For the freshwater boater that is about to walk away thinking this is not required on a boat operated in freshwater, hold on a minute, and read this. All untreated water contains particles in solution in various amounts and most of the contaminants are salts.

A good example of fresh water containing sediments and salts is to look inside a cave at all the magnificent stalagmites and stalactites. The oceans on the other hand are known for the large number of contaminants of which a high proportion is salt. We all operate on untreated water so all our gear, our vessels and our machinery are subjected to contact with water, either externally or internally. The issue is that when the water evaporates, the sediments of which a large portion is salts, stay behind. Therefore, it is best to rinse off our stuff with treated water to reduce the amount of salt deposits.

Fresh water works well but it works better at lifting and keeping salts and dirt in suspension with the aid of soap, yes that is why we use soap and not plain water. For water with a high concentration of sodium (aka salt) most soaps are not that effective therefor a prudent choice is to use soaps or specialty products such as Salt Away to remove salts and soaps, and to remove gunk.

Salt Away is a product that is available in concentrated form and when diluted with fresh water it reportedly removes salts from the surfaces. This is very practical in all conditions where salts are in contact with our stuff and not just on boats but places like our boat trailers, our cars and even the outdoor furniture if one is fortunate to live near the coast.

Salt Away kits are available that will mix the product at a given ratio directly into a garden hose which make using the product much simpler and more practical. These kits are an easy way to give the boat a Salt Away engine flush or a total washdown with a Salt Away spray. Using Salt Away for boats is one of the few uses because as mentioned earlier this product is also effective on land such as washing down a boat trailer after a launch or the fishing or scuba gear.

Sailors can also benefit from this product by washing the lines and sails to remove or reduce the salt buildup. An important function for boaters with engines is to flush the engines after use. Using Salt Away boat wash to flush the engine is the best boat engine flush the vessel can get, period.

Salt Away will remove the salt deposits lurking in the raw water-cooling system reducing the harmful effects of corrosion especially during the lay-up periods and should be a recommended procedure during any winterizing preparations. But remember to always consult the original equipment manufacturers documentation on how to flush your engine and what products are acceptable. So, when it’s time to de-salt your equipment, rest assured Go2Marine has the items you need, in stock, ready to ship at prices that will not break the budget.
