Purchasing Regulatory Buoys

Prior to installing any buoy or marker, it is prudent to contact the controlling authority for guidance and permitting. Maritime buoys provide the mariner with important and prudent navigational information and guidance. Regulatory buoys such as a no wake buoy or a swimming buoy are marker buoys which depict special navigational areas and are law enforceable with a design, shape and nomenclature that adheres to specific regulatory requirements. Therefore, it is best to consider purchasing a commercially produced product rather than using a substitute.Go2Marine offers a comprehensive selection of regulatory buoys from respected manufacturers such as Jim Buoy® and Taylor Made®.

Green can buoys are cylinder shaped. Red buoys are cone shaped and are called nun buoys. Both kinds are numbers. Green cans will have odd numbers. Red nun buoys will have even numbers. As you cruise upstream, the numbers will increase.Jim Buoy and Taylor Made regulatory buoys are manufactured from high quality synthetic material that will not rot, rust or decay and fair well for a long time in the sun and the harsh marine environment. Navigational buoys such as a red nun buoy, a white and red striped buoy or a green can buoy when placed, must adhere to the lateral system which is that system adopted by the United States of America Aids to Navigation System. Lateral regulatory buoys are buoys that are always used to mark the two sides of a channel. Not-lateral markers and buoys can be found anywhere in the water. To learn more about regulatory and navigation buoys check out the What You Need to Know About the Markers on the Water from the United States Coast Guard.

Lights for buoys have become inexpensive and self-contained thanks to the advancement in solar and led technology. Many of the buoy lights have an enclosed battery that is charged during the day by an onboard solar panel. At night the battery operates the led light. The lights are available in white, red, or green with three flash modes built in (15, 30, 60 flashes/minute). All these types of buoys and lights are available and competitively priced from Go2Marine.

Non-Regulatory Buoys

Apart from regulatory or navigation, buoys are also used in sport and for practical purposes. Competitive water skiing uses buoys such as a water ski buoy or a slalom buoy. Competitive sailing also makes use of buoys to indicate the layout of the course. These types of buoys are made of a softer material in order to prevent damage to a vessel or person during an inadvertent collision. Another common use of a buoy is for a mooring. Mooring buoys come in different shapes and sizes. The size required depends on the weight of the ground tackle that is attached to the buoy. The shape, color and markings are of importance if placing the mooring in a location that is managed by a controlling body.

Fenders are great for protecting the boat against damage from a dock, pier or pylon and are not thought of as a buoy although they make great temporary buoys or marker floats should the need arise. To keep a buoy, float, or marker stationary so it does not float away it requires a good anchor and tackle. Tackle consists of all chain a combination of chain and rope and sometimes all rope. To anchor a buoy to the sea or lakebed, screw type anchors are becoming more and more popular as well as being convenient and economical compared to concrete blocks or steel weights. No matter what the marker, buoy or float requirement is, Go2Marine can provide all that is required and more.
