Choosing a Fishing Rod

When it comes to choosing the correct fishing rod, the choices are nearly endless. Depending on the type of fishing that you are going to be doing, there are fishing rod choices ranging from heavy-duty deep sea fishing rods to the ultra light fishing rod and all types in between. And all these fishing rods come in different actions, materials, and lengths.

Once you know the type of fishing rod you will need, it's time to go shopping. Some of the best fishing rods are manufactured by companies such as Berkley,  Daiwa LTD, LamiglasOkuma, G. Loomis, Shimano, Penn, and Ugly Stik. These companies make a variety of different fishing rods like saltwater fishing rods, bass fishing rods, drift fishing rods, and baitcasting rods just to name a few.

What are Fishing Rods Made Of?

Since fishing rods are available in different materials, choosing the right one can help make a big difference in your fishing success. The most popular materials used include fiberglass, graphite (a.k.a carbon), and composite, with fiberglass being the strongest, most flexible, and most affordable. Because fiberglass fishing rods are stronger, they can also take more of a beating.

Graphite is the lightest yet is not as durable as fiberglass, being more stiff and brittle; but it is more sensitive, allowing you to feel even the smallest nibbles so you can set the hook quickly. Composite rods will provide the most performance and are made of a combination of fiberglass and graphite, making them versatile. You get all the strength and flexibility of a fiberglass rod without sacrificing sensitivity.

Get a Piece of the Action!

The last thing to touch on is action. Generally, fishing rods come in choices of Fast/Light,Medium, and Heavy/Slow, although there are in-between ratings like Extra-Fast (or "Ultra Light" like this one by Ugly Stik) and Moderate-Fast (a.k.a. "Medium Heavy" like this one by Penn) as well. The rule of thumb is the lighter the action, the more sensitive the rod tip will be for feeling those tiny nibbles. These light fishing rods allow the rod to bend from the tip all the way to the butt, making even the smallest fish a thrill to fight.

But medium-action fishing rods like this Shimano fishing rod can also provide a good hook set because they move a little slower, allowing more time for the fish to bite. They are good for distance casting as well.

Whichever one you decide is right for you--or all three--you'll find them here at Go2marine, along with kid's fishing poles and rod and reel combos; don't forget the boatload of bait and other great stuff that screams, "Fishing!" We have fishing gear, tools, and accessories from the Pure Fishing company, too, so you'll be all set. Now, go catch some fish!
