Engine Cooling Pumps

Whether an engine is a gas or diesel, it creates an enormous amount of heat while running--due not only to the combustion itself but also to the friction of the various moving parts. If this heat is not managed correctly it will become excessive and the engine will sustain irreversible damage. This is where engine cooling pumps come in.

Overheating an engine is a serious condition that must be avoided and a good start is by servicing the cooling system on a regular basis. There are not many components in the system, but engine cooling pumps and everything else must perform optimally in order to function properly.

For inboard marine engines, it is rare to find an open cooling system. An open cooling system is where the raw water passes directly through the engine to cool it. In the more common closed system, the raw water drawn from outside the vessel is used to cool the cooling water that circulates through the engine.

This is done by using a heat exchanger, which keeps the two types of liquid separated from each other by metal tubes that allow the heat to transfer from the hot liquid to the cooler liquid. The benefit of a closed cooling system is that the cooling liquid within the engine can contain beneficial additives that reduce corrosion or prevent the liquid from freezing during extreme cold spells. The downside of the closed-loop system is its complexity, but regardless of the type of cooling system, they all rely on a pump to circulate the cooling fluid.

The engine cooling water pump is either driven by gears and attached to the engine block or is a standalone unit driven with rubber belts. The engine cooling water pump for an outboard or an inboard has one thing in common--a rubber impeller.

Cooling pumps for marine engines are simple and very effective for what they do and are easy to maintain...but there's the rub, they must be maintained! Allowing the engine cooling system water pump to run dry will damage or break the impeller and render the pump ineffective or inoperable. Replacing the rubber impeller is straightforward but locating every one of the broken pieces of the old impeller can be tricky, yet it must be done or it will clog the lines.

Two of the main manufacturers of marine engine cooling pumps are Jabsco and Sherwood. Although both manufacturers might produce a pump that fits the same application, Jabsco engine cooling pumps are not always interchangeable with Sherwood pumps and vice versa. There are many different configurations and sizes of rubber impellers for engine cooling pumps, and you must look carefully to make sure the replacement is correct when compared to the original.

If you need an entire engine cooling system water pump, just an impeller, or some other type of cooling system parts, take a look at not only our stock but our fair prices!
