Survival Science: Inflatable PFDs vs. Foam Vests

The days of the bulky, uncomfortable "orange horse collar" are over. Modern Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) are designed so you forget you are wearing them.

Compliance saves lives. Here is how to outfit your crew, from the captain to the toddler.

1. For Adults: The Mustang Inflatable Revolution

Serious boaters choose Mustang Survival Inflatables. These vests are flat and lightweight until they hit the water.

  • Hydrostatic (HIT): The pro choice. It only inflates under water pressure. Rain or spray won't trigger it. Ideal for sailing or rough weather.
  • Automatic: Inflates when a dissolvable tablet gets wet. Great for calm waters.
  • The Benefit: Because they aren't bulky, you can wear them all day while fishing or working without restriction.

2. For Kids: Neoprene & Heads-Up Safety

Buying a life jacket for a child is different. You need a Type II vest with a "Heads-Up" pillow.

  • Infants/Toddlers (<30 lbs): Must have a crotch strap (to prevent the vest from sliding up) and a large collar to flip the child face-up in the water.
  • Comfort: Look for Neoprene or "BioLite" materials. If the vest is scratchy nylon, the kid will cry and want to take it off. Soft neoprene keeps them happy and safe.

3. USCG Requirements

Remember, you must have one wearable PFD for every person on board, plus one throwable device (like a Life Ring or cushion) if your boat is over 16 feet.
