Description

When traveling to the great Northwest or the state of Alaska you’re entering the land of big things: big mountains, big trees, big fish and big, bad bears. The original artwork was created using scratchboard. Back in 1994, Dr. Tom Conley asked me to do a logo for a pediatric clinic he was starting in Ketchikan. He wanted to call it Callisto. In Greek mythology, Callisto was a nymph who was transformed into a bear by Zeus. Her story explains the creation of the constellations Ursa Major (the big dipper and the symbol for the state of Alaska) and Ursa Minor.

Big Bears, Big Fish has been printed using the discharge ink technique, which bleaches out the shirt dye along the delicate lines of the artwork so there’s no actual ink left on the shirt.
