Electrical gremlins on a vessel rarely originate from a failed switch or blown light—more often than not, they trace directly back to poorly terminated wire connections. Under the continuous vibration, moisture, and temperature swings of a marine environment, an improper crimp will pull loose or corrode from the inside out.

In this video guide, our rigging team demonstrates visual examples of common wiring mistakes and breaks down how to make superior, ABYC-compliant connections every time using Ancor Marine-Grade Wire, Terminals, and Precision Rigging Tools.

Common Stripping Mistakes: Too Much vs. Too Little

Getting the strip length right is the foundation of a reliable electrical termination:

  • Too Much Insulation Stripped: Leaves exposed bare copper wire outside the barrel. This creates an immediate short-circuit hazard and exposes unsealed copper strands to humid, salty marine air.
  • Too Little Insulation Stripped: The conductor does not seat deep enough into the barrel. When crimped, the tool compresses down on only a fraction of the wire strands, resulting in weak mechanical retention, high electrical resistance, and voltage drop.
  • The Perfect Strip: The conductor inserts cleanly until it rests squarely against the internal center stop of the barrel, while the outer wire jacket sits flush with the barrel entrance—leaving zero bare copper exposed.

Nylon Terminal Connections & The Double Crimp Advantage

When working with nylon-insulated ring terminals, spades, and quick-disconnects, precision placement is equally critical:

  • Conductor Extension: The bare wire strands should just barely peek through the end of the metal wire barrel inside the inspection opening.
  • Insulation Insertion: The jacketed portion of the wire must seat into the nylon sleeve barrel to provide proper strain relief.
  • Double Crimp Action: Using an Ancor double-ratchet crimper, one jaw compresses the metal barrel onto the bare conductor for electrical continuity, while the second jaw crimps the outer sleeve around the wire jacket. This provides mechanical strain relief, preventing vessel vibration from flexing and snapping wire strands at the terminal root.
