Upgrading Your Boat's Engine to Electronic Ignition by Pertronix®
For the owners of boats fitted with gasoline engines, the arrival of miniature and robust electronics has fortunately made away with points and condensers in the engines ignition system. There is better news, if by chance the vessel is still equipped with the antiquated ignition system, there is seamless retrofit electronic ignition kits available. Pertronix® a leading manufacturer of aftermarket marine electronic ignition components with an impressive line-up of models that cover almost every marine distributor out there. These electronic ignition modules are not only for converting from point, they are used to replace faulty OEM ignition modules at the fraction of the cost or as a substitute when OEM equipment is no longer available.
Why Swtich to Pertronix® Ignition Kits
A Pertronix® Points Conversion kit allows running a stock distributor while improving the reliability and performance of the ignition system. The Pertronix® Ignitor kit simply bolts to the distributor in place of the points assembly and provides an accurate trigger signal. The Pertronix® electronic ignition improves the timing accuracy and prevents ‘points bounce’ at higher rpm. The electronic technology also improves the dwell control to improve the spark output of the coil resulting in a hotter spark at the spark plug. Ignitor kits are available for engines with all number of cylinders such as the igniter kit 2 for two cylinder engines or the Pertronix® kit 1146A electronic ignition conversion kit that replaces standard point-type ignition for many popular 4-cylinder engines such as Chris-Craft®, OMC®, Mercruiser®, Universal® and Atomic Four® with Delco distributors; or the Pertronix® 91564 Ignitor fits most Autolite ® distributors found on 6 cylinder engines;
Pertronix® Distributors and Coils
In the event the stock distributor is no longer serviceable, Pertronix® manufactures a large selection of aftermarket performance distributors to match any application. Although all the ignitor kits work with the stock coils and spark plug wires it is worth considering replacing these with Pertronix® parts such as the Pertronix® coil and spark plug wires. The Pertronix ® Flamethrower® has epoxy filled coils housed in a canister that is engineered for high vibration applications commonly experienced in the marine environment.
